finding the right coaching match

If you’re on the hunt for a real estate coach, you’ve likely felt overwhelmed. There are so many options: trainers, consultants, mentors, coaches, and hybrid programs. Add to that the question of who’s qualified, which format is right for you, and how you’ll know if it’s even worth your time. With new real estate coaching programs popping up every day, it can feel impossible to find the right fit. But don’t worry—we’ve got you covered.

With real estate coaching options expanding by the day, this challenge isn’t getting any easier. But, do not give up! A great coach can be worth their weight in gold. Here’s how you can get past those blockers and find your perfect match.

1. The Role

You might think you’re looking for a “coach,” but you’re really after a specific outcome or transformation. The title matters less than what the person can help you achieve. In reality, the best professionals bring multiple skills to the table—training, consulting, mentoring, and coaching—to support you at different stages of your career.

Trainer

  • Structured learning experiences for groups or individuals.
  • Focuses on specific skills or tasks.
  • Think: “Do it for myself.”
  • Example: Reading a book or taking a class on CRM setup.

Consultant

  • Provides tailored advice and solutions.
  • Often solves specific problems alongside you.
  • Think: “Do it for me” or “Do it with me.”
  • Example: Hiring an expert to revamp your buyer checklist.

Mentor

  • A more experienced person sharing wisdom.
  • Often a long-term relationship for holistic growth.
  • Think: “Advice.”
  • Example: Someone who’s 10+ years ahead in production or team building.

Coach

  • Guides you to your own “aha” moments.
  • Uses powerful questions and reflection.
  • Think: “The Being.”
  • Example: You bring a challenge, they help you see it from new angles.

Below is a quick look at how these roles might support you at different career stages:

At The Helm, we coach real estate coaches to develop competency across these areas. Many start with a focus on training, consulting, or mentoring (the doing), but over time, they build coaching skills that unlock deeper transformation for their clients (the being).

2. The Format

Next, think about how you want to engage. Historically, a “real estate coach” meant a weekly 30-minute call, but now we have everything from 1:1 sessions to large group webinars. Which one is right for you? It depends on your goals, your learning style, and your budget.

Type Definition Best Suited For Pricing
1:1 Coaching One-on-one sessions (virtual or in-person), 30-60 mins each Seasoned agents who need a tailored approach; those seeking full confidentiality; leaders who want high accountability. High
Masterminds Peer group sharing and support, often led by a facilitator Agents with established businesses; those who thrive on peer feedback; self-driven leaders who want insight from others “in it.” Medium
Small Group Coach-curated group (6-8 people) with guided sessions and peer input Agents at any stage; those who enjoy shared learning; professionals seeking a more affordable alternative to 1:1. Medium
Classes / Workshops Structured group experiences, in-person or virtual, centered on a specific topic Generally earlier-career agents or those looking for a refresher on fundamentals and practical tactics. Low
Large Group Weekly calls or webinars with audience Q&A Earlier-career agents who want to learn from a specific coach at a lower cost; those who like live, scheduled sessions. Low
Communities Digital platforms (FB Groups, specialized apps, etc.) for member interaction Varies widely; depends on entry requirements, engagement level, and offerings. Free–High

A note on hybrids: Some coaches blend multiple formats into one program (for instance, 1:1 coaching plus a curated group for networking). Pricing can vary greatly. Look for the best option that fits your budget and desired outcomes.

3. The Decision

Once you’ve narrowed down your list, decide what credentials or qualities will earn your trust. Consider:

  • Industry experience (team leadership, years in production)
  • Specializations (buyers vs. sellers, luxury clients, transaction volume)
  • Coaching credentials (training, certifications, references)
  • Personality and communication style

Don’t Forget Connection

All the data in the world won’t replace genuine rapport. Think about the teachers who made the biggest impact on you. The same rule applies here. If you don’t “click” with a coach, it’s unlikely you’ll get the results you want, no matter how skilled they are.

Two ways to test fit:

  1. A chemistry call: Many coaches offer a free or low-cost session. Check your energy level during and after the call. Do you feel empowered? Encouraged?
  2. Follow them online: See how they communicate through social media, blog posts, or videos. If their style resonates, that’s a good sign.

Ultimately, trust your head, heart, and gut.
