Pam O’Connor didn’t rise to the top by outshouting the room. She led by tuning in – deeply, thoughtfully, and on her own terms.
As the founding CEO of Leading Real Estate Companies of the World (LeadingRE), Pam helped grow a small, domestic network into a globally respected alliance of 565+ independent brokerages across 70 countries. But numbers only tell part of the story. Pam’s legacy is rooted in her belief in independence, innovation, humility—and people.
In this wide-ranging conversation, Pam reflects on the leadership values that guided her, what most people misunderstand about independent brokerages, and the seismic shifts redefining the industry today.

From Accidental Pioneer to Industry Icon
Pam became the first woman to lead a major real estate network in 1985. At the time, she didn’t even realize she was breaking barriers. Raised by a strong mother and influenced by early mentors, she didn’t see gender as a limitation—she saw it as another strength.
Her leadership style has always been rooted in resourcefulness, collaboration, and emotional intelligence. She focused less on headlines and more on building structures that would endure long after she stepped down.
Why Independence Still Matters
Pam is a fierce advocate for the power of independent brokerages. “They don’t have a giant brand name behind them,” she says. “But they’re scrappy, adaptable, and deeply connected to their markets.”
She built LeadingRE to be the “unfranchise”—a place where independents could keep their identities but still access world-class tools, learning, and global connections. It wasn’t just about sharing referrals; it was about building community, standards, and confidence.
Humility, Humor, and the Power of “We”
Pam believes great leadership comes from knowing what you don’t know, being open to feedback, and never believing your own hype. “The pronoun we is more powerful than I,” she says. Vulnerability, she adds, isn’t weakness—it’s a strategy for connection.
She also reminds leaders to stop waiting for recognition. “Promote your brokerage. Promote your agents. But do it with humility. There’s a difference between sharing impact and chasing praise.”
What’s Next: Networks, Standards, and NAR’s Future
Pam doesn’t shy away from critiquing where the industry needs to evolve. From concerns over the MLS rollback to the need for stronger licensing standards, she believes there’s urgent work ahead.
She sees networks—true, peer-driven communities—as more vital than ever. “It’s lonely at the top. Leaders need a tribe. Not just coaching, but honest, shared experience from people who understand.”
Pam also hopes NAR refocuses on advocacy and professional standards. “We don’t need them in every corner of the industry. But we do need strong representation, and we need better ways for consumers to identify trusted professionals.”
The Bottom Line: Passion, Perspective, and Paying It Forward
Pam may be retired, but her influence hasn’t waned. She continues to mentor leaders, serve on boards, and advise groups like The Helm. Her motivation? “I love the people who care about this work. I want to help them grow.”
For anyone looking to lead with integrity, heart, and impact—this episode is a masterclass.
