Coach Q&A: I left my corporate job for the freedom of real estate but I feel like I’m working even more now. Help!

From Corporate to Chaos

As a former corporate lady myself, I can completely relate to this! I left corporate because I was drawn to the allure of owning my own schedule, but I quickly found that unstructured days brought a lot of uncertainty about how best to fill them. I said yes to everything as a way to stay busy. In corporate, “busy” means important. But in entrepreneurship, my lack of boundaries quickly spiraled into a schedule that included nights and weekends. Before I knew it, I wasn’t owning my schedule at all… my schedule was owning me.

Shifting the Mindset

When we leave corporate, we need to retrain our brains. In corporate, we were paid for our time. The more hours we logged, the more we advanced. But as entrepreneurs, we’re paid for our value. Sometimes that looks like a 15-minute phone call that completely calms an anxious buyer. Other times it’s three hours spent at a networking lunch building relationships that will pay off for years.

The Power of a Time Audit

The shift comes in realizing that time is our most valuable asset. To make it work for you—not against you—you need to get crystal clear on where it’s going. That’s why I recommend starting with a time audit: track your activities for one week and take a real look at how you’re filling your days. Are your hours moving you closer to your bigger goals, or are they slipping away on tasks and distractions that don’t matter?

Reclaiming Your Freedom

Here’s the good news: the freedom you left corporate for is still there. It just requires intention. By identifying what truly drives your business forward, setting boundaries, and designing your days around your priorities—not just your obligations—you’ll find yourself back in the driver’s seat. Freedom doesn’t come from doing everything… it comes from doing the right things.
